The seven learning principles include the following:
-The Multimedia Principle: Text and graphics integrated
-The Contiguity Principle: the brain creates a logical sequence in a way it expects it to be laid out e.g. left to right, top to left...varies depending on culture
-The Modality Principle: sound, graphics, and harmony
-The Redundancy Principle: repeating information; describing the same thing in multiple ways...graphics and text that support each other
-The Coherence Principle
-The Personalization Principle: visual appeal
e.g. the dinosaur website that makes it attracting with bright colours and fun pictures
-The Segmenting and Pertaining Principle: breaking tasks down into distinct and manageable steps --> Result: user feels less overwhelmed.
When I learned about these principles, I realized the importance of enabling students to access information in multiple ways. For example, students will be able to understand concepts more deeply when they use their different senses to make connections with the new information, rather than just reading about it in an article. This way, it is more likely that the contents will stay in the long term memory. Understanding these principles will definitely help me plan lessons and activities effectively, so that students can have meaningful learning experiences.
